The Story

A WARM WELCOME
Dating back to 1936, the house on Portman Drive is well-proportioned and was designed for family living.
“It was built as part of the Hill Farm Estate – this was an area that was once farmland,” Alan explains. “We liked the house back when we were looking in 1970 because it was mock Tudor, which is a style we both really like.”
Inside, the property did require some updating but there was something about it that just drew them in: “It has a certain warmth about it,” he says. “There are some houses you just step into and you know they are just right for you – this was one of them.”

BALCONY SCENE
Over the years the couple have upgraded and enhanced their home, while also ensuring it retains its character.
“We have replaced the bathroom and the kitchen, and have had a loft extension built,” says Alan. “This gave us one large bedroom and an en suite bathroom: we then decided to move upstairs and to leave our three daughters on the lower floor, where they could have their bedrooms and share the family bathroom.”
He adds: “We also extended the kitchen and were able to give one of the back bedrooms a balcony, which has been a nice feature.”

ENTERTAINING SPACE
The house has also been redecorated over the decades – today it still maintains a traditional yet inviting style, with stripped wooden floors, large bay windows and a carefully chosen colour scheme.
“They are all nice rooms in the house; there is plenty of good family space and room for welcoming guests,” he says. “We spend a lot of time in the drawing room and we do also like to use the dining room for meals.”
There is also a summer house and a terrace for outside dining, as well as areas of lawn and attractive mature trees and shrubs.
“We have really enjoyed the garden and have often had bring and buy sales here or strawberry and cream teas,” he adds.

GREEN SPACES
Those living in the area that enjoy spending time outdoors have plenty of choice of other places to visit in the area too, according to Alan.
“We have fishing lakes and nature reserves within easy reach,” he says. “There are lots of attractive places that are great for walking or watching wildlife in their natural habitats.”
Lee Valley Regional Park, for example, is a 10,000-acre long linear park, which follows the course of the River Lea along the Lea Valley. The park offers a diverse mix of countryside areas, urban green spaces, heritage sites, country parks, nature reserves and lakes, and riverside trails, as well as leading sports centres covering an area of over 10,000 acres. There are also a number of major reservoirs and multiple water courses (rivers and canals) within Lee Valley Park.

EXCELLENT AMENITIES
Also just a short drive from South Woodford is Epping Forest, the largest open space in the London area covering almost 6,000 acres.
This is another fantastic place for walking, cycling and enjoying other recreational sports and activities. It is also renowned for its wildlife and nature and is recognised nationally and internationally for its conservation.
“The beauty of this area is that we have lots of places like this close by yet we have schools, shops, supermarkets and good transport links too,” Alan adds. “Everyone says this is a very nice place to live and that it is a caring community and I would say certainly agree.”

Setting The Scene

To the front of the house on Portman Drive there is off-street parking. The house also has a detached single garage. To the back there is a mature and attractive garden, which is mostly laid to lawn and has been landscaped.
There are areas for outside dining and relaxation, as well as a pretty summer house.
