The River Exe
The River Exe is known as one of the West Country's finest salmon rivers. The Exe rises on Exmoor and flows through open moorland and steep wooded valleys, before flowing through open farmland where the river begins to slow providing some deeper holding pools.
The Exe has a good run of salmon and can produce big catches when the grilse arrive in summer.
The Poet Laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson, stayed in Exebridge in June 1981, where he referred to the Exe Valley as 'a land of bubbling streams'. Until the 1950s a tree stump below Perry Weir was known as Tennyson's Oak. Local legend has it that it was while sitting under this oak that the poet began his famous poem "The Brook".
