The Story

GREEN LIGHT
The grand estate was divided up in the 1970s and the large house was turned into apartments. The gatehouse then became a property in its own right.
“One of the magical things about this house is that it is like a mini-castle,” he says. “It is also surrounded by wonderful woodland, where there is so much wildlife. There is no fence at the back: it just goes straight into the woods behind. We love this because it means deer and other animals just wander in.”
He adds: “Someone else could fence it in but we have loved being surrounded by this amazing greenery and really feeling part of it. We often sit out in the summer, having a barbecue, and just admiring the amazing green light through the trees.”

HIGH QUALITY
Today the property offers generous single-storey living space. It opens into an entrance hall, which gives on to a long, dual aspect drawing room at one end, which has doors on to the terrace and garden. This also opens into a conservatory. At this end of the house there is also a spacious kitchen breakfast room, with a breakfast bar. There are two bedrooms: one with an en suite bathroom and the other with its own shower and cloakroom.
“We have done a lot of work to the house. I am involved in property and so everything has been completed to the highest standard,” he says. “The kitchen was hand-built and is of a very high quality and then my pièce de résistance five years ago was the creation of my ‘man cave.’”

GREAT RETREAT
The owner converted his garage to create this exceptional space, which has its own en suite shower room.
“I call it The Growlery, which comes from a line from Charles Dickens in Bleak House: ‘This, you must know, is the growlery. When I am out of humour, I come and growl here,’” he jokes. “It is decorated in the style of a Scottish hunting lodge. It is a great retreat or study – or could be perfect for a teenager.”
Like the rest of the house, The Growlery, which can also double as a spare room for guests, is painted in Farrow & Ball shades.
“I wanted the whole house to have a stylish, high quality feel,” he adds. “Whenever work was carried out, master craftsmen were brought in!”

WELCOMING FRIENDS
The conservatory is used as a dining room and really comes into its own in the summer, when the double doors can be opened on to the decking, where there is a picnic table.
“It is lovely because everyone can wander in and out,” he says. “The drawing room is very much the heart of the home in winter: this is the place to relax in front of the television or to read.”
The whole house has been designed with entertaining in mind, he points out. There are good inside and outside spaces, and the property opens easily on to its beautiful garden.
“We have had family birthdays here, including celebrating my 50th, and we held my son’s christening. We have had more than 100 people here on occasion, which is fine as we have approximately three-quarters of an acre,” he says. “Having people to stay is also very easy – I have two grown-up girls who are often here and there is always plenty of space.”

SHEER PERFECTION
He has relished the tranquillity of the setting, as well as the friendly village community.
“It is unbelievable how quiet it is here. There are amazing walks but you can also enjoy all the benefits of Milton Keynes, which is just a few minutes’ drive by car, and you have good access to the M1,” he says. “I love the peace and the privacy, as well as the lovely feel of the house itself. This place really does have everything you could want.”

Setting The Scene

Set in approximately three-quarters of an acre, the house enjoys secluded, wooded gardens, which back on to open woodland. A large drive offers plenty of off-road parking. To the rear, the house opens on to an area of decking and then a great expanse of lawn.
“We have kept it quite natural,” says the owner. “We have put in paths and beds but we love the way it rolls into the woodland. Our aim with the garden has been to be very sympathetic to the environment.”
