The Story

UNIQUE HOME
The initial conversion of the property was carried out creatively and
with great sympathy for the fabric of the building. The current
owners have decorated and maintained it in keeping with its style
while also ensuring it is a comfortable place to live. The ground floor
of the house includes an entrance lobby, kitchen and dining room,
as well as the spacious drawing room. There is also a bedroom,
which has an en suite shower room, and an additional room that
could be a study or bedroom. The first floor is accessed via two
separate staircases – one leads to master bedroom with landing
area and bathroom, while the pulpit staircase opens on to a second
bedroom with en suite bathroom. “This arrangement has worked
very well for us,” she says.
WINTER WARMTH
The enormous drawing room has the potential to be arranged to
suit new owners, with space for comfortable seating, dining and
even working if required. “This is a lovely Christmas house – the
drawing room has plenty of space for friends and family to spread
out into and we have seated 10 to 15 people round the table in the
dining room for dinner. The wood-burning stove is amazing: it puts
out such a lot of warmth that we rarely need the central heating on
at the same time.”
LEAFY LIVING
The bedrooms are all very individual, she continues. “I love going up
the pulpit stairs to my daughter’s room and then looking back down
on to the drawing room,” she says. “This is a very private bedroom
and, although it has a fireplace in, it does have a more modern feel
than the rest of the house. All the bedrooms have en suite bath or
shower rooms, which is fantastic.” In the summer, the family have
enjoyed spreading out into their beautiful garden. “This is really
something quite special,” she admits. “We are surrounded by trees,
which makes it very private and in May it bursts into bloom with the
rhododendrons and in autumn it looks wonderful as the colours of
the leaves change.” There is also a summer house out in the
garden. “My husband had thought he would work out there but our
daughter tends to use it for parties and sleepovers!” she adds.
VILLAGE SETTING
Flimwell itself has also been an exceptional place to live. The family
have enjoyed being part of village life, while also having access to
good schools, shops, major roads and railway stations. “It is very
easy to travel from here because we are within easy reach of the
A21,” she says. “We can drive into London or down to Hastings or
Brighton very quickly by car. We can also travel into London in
about 50 minutes by train from Wadhurst Station.”
NATURAL BEAUTY
The location has also given them access to beautiful countryside
and to National Trust sites, as well as historic locations. “We like
visiting Battle Abbey, Bodiam Castle and Scotney Castle – having
so many wonderful places like this within about 15 minutes has
been great,” she says. “We have also enjoyed our proximity to Bewl
Water.” Flimwell is just a short stroll from beautiful Bewl Water. This
reservoir is home to more than 3,000 different species of wildlife
and is a refuge for birdlife. It is a pleasant place to walk or cycle at
weekends. In the springtime it is carpeted with colour, when
bluebells cover the ground in the wooded areas. “Having Bewl
Water on the doorstep has been fantastic for us,” she adds. “We will
miss that, as well as the quirkiness of this house, when we leave.”

Setting The Scene

Providence Chapel is set in leafy grounds. There is a large parking
area to side, which has ample space for three to four cars. The rear
garden is secluded and offers generous space. There is also a large
summerhouse or games room to the rear.
