Sporting pursuits in the area include hunting with the Blackmore & Sparkford Vale, National Hunt racing at Wincanton and Taunton and sailing and water sports on the south coast.

Description

Charlton Mackrell Court is a magnificent example of Strawberry Hill Gothic worthy of mention in Nikolous Pevsner's architectural guide to Somerset.

Dating from the late Georgian period with earlier origins, the Gothic decorations were completed in 1792 by the Reverend Richard Ford, rector of Charlton Mackrell.

Boasting large floor to ceiling windows with thin sash bars and pointed Gothic tops, the house even on a dull day is bathed in light. Along with a number of fine period features this wonderful property has a rare elegance.

Arriving at the gates of Charlton Mackrell Court, a sweeping drive takes the visitor to the front of the property with a discrete turning allowing access to the Courtyard cottages and rear.

A fine crenellated portico leads to the wide and spacious hallway. One of the particular features of the house is the easy flow of rooms from this central hallway. The house has been very well maintained by the current owners and is decorated with great flair to reflect the special character of the building and is now offered as a supremely comfortable family house.

All the rooms benefit from high ceilings and elegant proportions with fine cornice detail and working period fireplaces and are ideal for entertaining.

With so many wonderful reception rooms the family kitchen is one of the highlights being large in scale and with a bay window that allows lovely views onto the garden.

The graceful cantilever stone staircase leads to a wide first floor landing from which all five principal bedrooms lead. The master bedroom has both an en suite bathroom and dressing room.

A choice of two staircases lead up to the second floor where there are a further five rooms used variously as bedrooms, nursery and sitting room, along with two further bathrooms and laundry room.

GARDENS AND GROUNDS
The mature gardens and grounds offer all the pleasures of an English Country garden. There are generous herbaceous borders, large expanses of lawn, magnificent and ancient trees, wild garden walks, water features, sculpted hedges and an orchard. A former walled garden houses the heated swimming pool and pool house with shower and bar area.

OUTBUILDINGS AND COTTAGES
To the east of the house is a courtyard comprising four cottages, a large barn, two double garages and further outbuildings. The arrangement is such that they lend themselves either to additional and ancillary accommodation to the main house or as staff accommodation or as letting opportunities.
