The Story

PICTURESQUE PLACE
The luxurious, detached house sits beautifully within its grounds at Stevington, nestled in picturesque, leafy surroundings. “We chose the plot, which is a third of an acre, because it was quiet and was in a garden location,” he explains. “It was also set well back at the end of a 70-yard drive.” The couple were able to position the house right at the centre of its plot surrounded by trees and landscaped garden, ensuring scenic views in every direction. “After the house was completed we had the garden landscaped and were able to add to the screening that was already here to give ourselves even more privacy,” he says.

SPACIOUS HOME
Careful thought went into the design of the house: the couple worked closely with the architect and builders. “We wanted to build an individual home, which was contemporary without being ultra-modern. It was important to us that there were lots of windows and glass doors so that it was light throughout and we wanted it to be spacious, we were not prepared to compromise on size.” As a result, the ground floor, which has underfloor heating, features a spectacular kitchen, breakfast and family room, as well as a generous drawing room.

BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS
Upstairs there are four bedrooms, two of which have en suite shower rooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom also has a dressing area. “We could easily have had five bedrooms but we decided we wanted to have four good-sized bedrooms, with plenty of storage,” he says. “Above the garage we created a one-bedroom annexe, with its own bathroom and kitchen. This is ideal for guests, a teenager or au pair.” Every room has TV and Sky TV points and built in ceiling B&W speakers in all ground floor main rooms and master bedroom and ensuite; the bedrooms all have matching fitted furniture. “Everything is here already, really all the next owners have to bring are their beds and sofas!” he jokes.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL
All the windows, including some sash windows, have been hand-made and even the front door is bespoke: “Again, this is a one-off – it has beautiful stained-glass that was handmade to a design by my wife.” The exquisite kitchen, which has a central island and marble work surfaces, was hand-built and the utility room was designed to blend in. Shelves, cupboards and storage spaces for printers and computer equipment were also built into the study to the couple’s design. The study was bespoke built to create a wall to wall library with storage and shelving one side and with a desk, window seat and cupboards with ample storage on the other. Everything is finished to an exceptional standard and is practical to use as well as attractive to look at. “Insulation throughout the property is also to the highest level,” he adds. “This house is always a comfortable temperature and yet is very economical to run.” Everything about life at Lower Glade has been enjoyable. There are spaces for the family to spend time together and to relax quietly alone. “Then we have the larger, more sophisticated drawing room and a smaller room, which can either be a formal dining room, snug or children’s room.”

CONVENIENT POSITION
The location has also suited them well: they are just five miles from the centre of Bedford and so enjoy good access to schools, shops and trains into London. It takes just 25 minutes to drive into Milton Keyes and 30 minutes to reach Northampton. “We can also get to the A1 and M1 easily and have good access to Luton, Birmingham and Heathrow airports,” he says. “At the same time we enjoy living in a village, which is so peaceful and where we can walk along the River Great Ouse or through the countryside when we choose. We have enjoyed being somewhere so beautiful yet convenient and have loved living in a house where absolutely everything has been considered.”

Setting The Scene

Lower Glade sits in grounds of approximately a third of an acre and lives up to its name. It is set well back from the country lane and is surrounded by leafy trees.
There is a gravel driveway and parking area, which can comfortably accommodate eight or more vehicles. The gardens offer a private and secluded haven. The lawns and terrace wrap around the house, offering plenty of places for outside dining and relaxation. The gardens are ideal for barbecues and summer parties.

Whats Nearby

Conveniently situated only 5/6 miles from Bedford, Stevington is a picturesque village with a real community feel, the Royal George Pub and the local sports club makes the village friendly for adults and children. There are wonderful walks along the river Great Ouse and the miles of countryside that surrounds the village. Bedford is the closest town where a larger host of shopping and restaurants can be found.

Within Easy Reach

The A6 is located only a few minutes drive and would provide the quickest route between Northampton and Bedford and further south. Bedford railway is 4/5 miles away which offers a great train service to St Pancras within hour within a hour or so of leaving your front door. Its amazing how far you can get from this village within 30 minutes as Milton Keynes, Wellingborough and Northampton are all accessible.

DIRECTIONS:

If travelling North on the A6, you would continue through Bedford and approx 2 miles will come to a junction signposted Oakley, take the slip road and turn left at the roundabout onto Lovell Road, continue along this road into the village of Oakley taking a left turn as the road forks. The road will then wind and cross the River Great Ouse and turn right at the next T junction onto Park Road. Follow this until you reach the crossroads in the centre of the village and go straight over onto Court Lane where the house will be in approximately 250 yards on your right hand side.
