The Story

LOCATION, LOCATION
Rectory Lodge dates back to 1907 and was built as additional accommodation for Rectory House next door, Holly explains. It was sold off privately about 50 years ago.
“It was built from local Warfield brick, which was apparently used for Downing Street too!” she says.
The couple moved to the house nine years ago, having been attracted to its character, space and lovely garden.
“It was also very much a case of location, location, location,” Holly recalls. “Although we are close to amenities, we are also down a small lane, with only about 14 other houses, and we are in the middle of fields. We have such beautiful views that it feels as if we are in the countryside.”

STYLISH INTERIOR
Over the years they have brought their own style to Rectory Lodge, creating an interior, which is conducive to family life and entertaining.
“We have been through the whole house,” she says. “We took walls down on the ground floor to make it much more open-plan. We added the new dining room, giving it roof tiles to tie in with the original house, and we redecorated throughout, using Farrow & Ball paint.”
Carpets were removed in the hallway and family area, and then the original floorboards were stripped and varnished.
“I used fabrics from Annie Sloan and Laura Ashley, and had blinds and curtains handmade,” she adds.

COMFORTABLE SPACES
The kitchen has oak units and granite work surfaces, and is a fabulous family space. There is a breakfast bar for casual meals and space for a breakfast table or comfortable seating in the family area, where there is also a wood-burning stove.
“I love the whole house but this is a space we use a lot,” says Holly. “We have it arranged as a snug and it is a great place to sit and chat with the family or with friends when they visit.”

WELCOMING FRIENDS
The couple have enjoyed entertaining at Rectory Lodge, hosting everything from small gatherings of friends to large parties.
“We have had lots of great times here,” says Holly. “We managed to seat 22 people for a three-course meal in the kitchen on one occasion. There is built-in wiring for speakers so we can play music and because we are not too close to our neighbours we do not have to worry about disturbing anyone else.”

GREAT BALANCE
The large garden is fabulous for summer events. This is also home to the detached double office, which is set up with electricity and wifi and has served both Holly and Alaster well in the past when they have needed to work from home.
“This has made a great office but could equally be a good man-cave or hobby space perhaps,” she suggests.
Travelling for work has also been easy: the couple drive to Maidenhead when they need to catch the train and it is quick to reach the M25.
“We are lucky enough to have three pubs and two restaurants within walking distance, and there are good local schools in this area,” Holly adds. “We have been very happy here – it has offered us that great balance of town and country living. We love being able to look out over the fields and this house is just such a lovely, warm, family home.”

Setting The Scene

Rectory Lodge sits in impressive grounds. At the front of the house there are gates to protect the driveway, where there is parking for several cars, along with a double garage. At the back of the property, there is an entertaining terrace. The gardens here are mainly lawned and there are several productive fruit trees, plus a vegetable plot. Located in the garden is an office building, which could have alternative uses. There are stunning views across the adjacent land.
