"Meanfield Cottage" Broughton in Furness. LA20 6BP

"Meanfield Cottage" is charming detached Lakeland Cottage, set in 2 acres or thereabouts, of gardens and woodland, which includes many specimen trees and bushes.

The cottage is believed to date from about 1750 and was the Manager's house of the neighbouring Workhouse. Many original features remain in the Cottage, including lots of exposed beams, original timber doors, and thick timber floors. The accommodation is beautifully higgledy-piggledy with steps and stairs. Intriguing.

Modern improvements include Oil Central Heating, Double-Glazing, a splendid, huge, Kitchen ( fitted with a fine range of units, Granite worktops, an AGA, Washing Machine, Dish Washer and a Belfast Sink ) and a pretty Bathroom being fully tiled and a white 3-piece suite and an over-bath shower). There are 3 Bedrooms ( all doubles) a delightfully cosy Lounge with a wood-burning cast-iron stove, and a separate Dining Alcove.

From the second Bedroom there are patio doors leading out to the Balcony, which is a lovely place to watch the sun go down whilst having a glass of chilled white or a soft Merlot.

The grounds are believed to extend to around 2 acres with a long lawn and lots of trees , bushes and shrubs which ensure a good degree of privacy. There is a large car parking area immediately adjacent, capable of accepting 3 or 4 vehicles and could be extended very easily if required.

Brief information about the Town of Broughton in Furness.

Broughton-in-Furness is a thriving small Market Town at the southern end of the fabulous Lake District National Park. It is well served by having a school, Quality Butcher's, Home Bakers, Fruit and Vegetable Shop, Post Office and Newsagent, an excellent Cafe, a superb Restaurant and 4 well supported public houses! Each year on 1st August. a Proclamation is read out from the steps of the Obelisk warning the public to keep the Queen's peace and not to short-change customers. Those who infringed those rules were placed in the adjacent stocks. Sea fish from Haverigg and fresh water fish from local rivers was sold on market day and the original slate fish slabs are still in situ.

In 1760 the market square was designed by John Gilpin Sawrey, the Lord of the Manor, who lived in nearby Broughton Towers, to imitate the elegant Georgian squares of London. The obelisk in the centre of the Square commemorates the Golden Jubilee of King George 3rd in 1810.

The Town Hall, which dates back to 1766, was once the Market Hall and now houses the Broughton Information Centre and a craft gallery.
Broughton is ideally placed for very easy access to the Southern Lakes and especially to the wonderfully unspoilt Western Lakes. The nearest Railway Station is at Foxfield, about 2 miles distant and access to the M6 ( J36 ) is about 40 minutes drive.
