The naming of Spains Hall commemorates a former owner, Hervey de Inspana whose family held the original house from the time of the conquest in 1066 to the reign of Henry II at the end of the 12th Century. It is unusual for a house that has been rebuilt many times since then to have retained its name. This adds further to the sense of place that greets any visitor.
A fragment of the house from medieval times survives in the roof above the dining room, one bay of a king-post hall roof, a rare feature and is tentatively dated to 1410.
The house we see today is essentially an Elizabethan one, which has been continually altered and embellished over 400 years. The main features were built in the 1580's, with the Dutch gables added in 1637 with a final wing in the same style added in the 1890's. It is a fascinating document of the changing use of the same family house.
Crucially the most recent alterations, carried out between 2008 and 2010 show almost no visible changes to the appearance of the three principal facades nor the main rooms within the house. Except to say that these subtle changes are in many ways the most revolutionary in its 500 years history and arise from a complete re thinking of the way a house of this age and character can be adapted and comfortably enjoyed in the 21st Century.
Internally the house combines a selection of magnificent light and spacious reception rooms with extensive and comfortable bedroom accommodation on the first floor. The second floor, once the domain of the house staff, is partially used and could provide further bedroom space if required.
Of particular note is the magnificent Reception Hall, part panelled with a fine open fireplace and doors leading to the elegant drawing room with views over the gardens to the South East. Adjoining is the library with a unique sense of history and views over the parkland to the south west.
Spains Hall is situated in the heart of rural North West Essex, within walking distance of Finchingfield which is recognised as one of England's most picturesque villages. The house is set comfortably at the centre of its own parkland with views over its gardens and the lakes and woodland beyond.
The village of Finchingfield offers a post office, general store, and various excellent public houses and restaurants. For a greater selection of amenity and shopping conveniences, Chelmsford, Saffron Walden and Bishops Stortford are easily accessible. The beautiful and historic city of Cambridge, famous for its colleges, is situated 24 miles away and offers an excellent range of cultural activities.
Audley End Train Station and Braintree Station both offer a mainline railway line to London Liverpool Street which can be reached in approximately 55 minutes. The property is also within easy reach of Stansted International Airport (13 miles).
Sporting opportunities in the area include hunting with the East Essex Hunt, racing at Newmarket and Chelmsford City Racecourse
