Description

Architectural and historical note
Tigh Na Mara is one of Scotland's best examples of an Arts and Crafts villa and has an astonishing waterfront position looking over the Firth of Clyde. It is full of inventive and intriguing flourishes that its architect - William Leiper - planned to the last detail when the house was re-built to incorporate a much earlier house in 1905. The villa is Category B listed and built under a rosemary tiled roof and is defined by its protruding bays, sandstone dressings and gargoyle inhabited porch.

William Leiper (1839-1916) lived in Helensburgh from the early 1870s and became the town's most prolific and influential architect. With the coming of the railway to Helensburgh, fashionable money poured into the town and Leiper was well placed to design 'art' villas for his wealthy clients. Beyond Helensburgh his achievements in Glasgow include the Gothic Dowanhill Church, Camphill Queens Park Church, the banqueting hall of the Glasgow City Chambers, the exuberant Sun Life building on West George Street and the magnificent Templeton Carpet Factory which is one of Glasgow's most iconic buildings, due to Leiper's extraordinary use of polychrome brick, glazed ceramic and mosaic as external decoration. In addition he designed some of the best Aesthetic Movement houses in Scotland, including the nearby Cairndhu (1881) as well as the Russian imperial yacht, 'Livadia', at that time the largest steam yacht ever constructed.

Tigh Na Mara itself has been home to some illustrious owners over the years including the playwright James Bridie, one of the founders of the Edinburgh Festival and co-founder of the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. Bridie is thought to have been living at Tigh Na Mara when he famously collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on The Paradine Case in 1947. Scottish rugby legends Brian Simmers and Bill Simmers, as well as the entertainer Jimmy Logan, also owned the house in later years.

Description

In typically innovative fashion, Leiper designed Tigh Na Mara to be entered at the rear elevation, thereby taking full advantage of the sunny south facing elevation. Internally the villa remains largely unaltered and retains many of its original fittings including wainscot panelling and broad panelled doors.

Internally the accommodation comprises a wonderful decorative archway to double storm doors which open onto a porch with tiled floor. This then leads into the impressive and substantial hall which boasts an a magnificent ingleneuk fireplace which is a well known Leiper trademark with inset fire, wood panelling and a vaulted ceiling with exposed timber beams . A splendid, broad staircase leads to the first floor landing. To the right of the reception hallway is an inner hallway into the playroom which has windows to the side and rear. There is also a sitting room with decorative fireplace and picture rail. From the sitting room there is access to the conservatory which capitalises on the breathtaking views. The magnificent drawing room also has an open outlook with two six bay windows providing a wealth of natural light and again, beautiful views of the Firth of Clyde. There is an elaborate decorative plaster ceiling, wooden sprung floors and a fine fireplace with hearth and surround. The traditional dining room has a striking six pane bay window which shares the panoramic views and also has wood panelling to half height.

There is access from the internal hall to the rear lobby which in turn leads to the kitchen, utility room, cloakroom and WC. The double aspect breakfasting kitchen has windows to the front and rear along with floor and wall mounted units with wooden work top, and a dark blue Aga. There is access to the utility room and to the separate stairway which leads to one of the first floor bedrooms and en suite bathroom.

The upper floor landing has original wood panelling and from here are further six double bedrooms; two being en suite. There are also two further family bathrooms and an office. There is an additional stairway from the office giving access to the rear lobby. Fixed stairway gives access to extensive and fully floored loft, there is a large skylight opening into the hallway allowing storage for larger items. The loft gives access to the cupola and roof area.

Two bedroom holiday cottage which presently is used as a holiday let.

Gardens

Entered via a substantial, electrically operated sliding gate the driveway sweeps towards the main house and encircles a formal rear garden which is predominantly lawned. It has a nautical terrace, rose garden and some wonderful borders which are seasonally awash with colour. The rear gardens are big enough to accommodate further residential development subject to to the usual planning approvals.

On the water side of the house the splendid gardens are predominantly lawned and gently slope towards the River Clyde. At one time there was a swimming pool which has since been replaced with a sunken garden and sittooterie.
