Historical Reference

The royal seabathing hospital is one of the oldest orthopaedic hospitals in the world. The hospital was designed to treat tuberculosis using the Thelasso-therapy treatment. This Sea water treatment was first introduced in Brighton then Dr Lettsom decided to create a similar facility in Margate for mainly the more deprived people of the Londons East End.
The nurses residence was an addition in later years and after the hospital closed in 1996 after more than 200 years the nurses residence continued to be used for a number of years.
