The Story

For years the couple had driven past the exquisite picture postcard cottage at Shenley Church End, wondering who lived there and dreaming about owning it themselves.
Then about 21 years ago, the Grade II Listed home became available and they decided to make it their own.
“We had really noticed the cottage since 1966 when we first moved to Milton Keynes,” one of them remembers. “We would often pass by and comment on its incredible character. It was such an attractive house.”
He adds: “We also loved it because it was in a quiet location, where you can often hear nothing but the sound of the bells of St Mary’s Church, yet you have all the facilities of the town on the doorstep.”

CHARACTER AND CHARM
The Homestead is believed to be about 350 years old and is likely to have been run as a small holding on the Knapp Estate.
“I have maps and documents that refer to the house as far back as 1693 but is thought from research be even older than that,” he says.
The previous owner had lived in the house for 40 years and the current owners knew they would be embarking upon a major restoration project. But they were only too happy to take it on.
“We wanted to retain its character and we took great care to use the right materials, such as lime wash and clay paint, and yet at the same time we wanted to give it some home comforts,” he explains. “It does still have so much charm and yet it is also a very easy home to live in because of its high ceilings and sense of space.”

ORIGINAL FEATURES
Today the delightful home sits within its pretty gardens looking every inch the fairy-tale home. Visitors enter via the hall and then find themselves either in the kitchen breakfast room or in the dining room, which leads on through into the drawing room. Also on the ground floor is a study, cloakroom and utility room. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, together with a cloakroom, dressing room and the family bathroom.
The whole house exudes history at every turn, from the beautiful old oak timbers in the ceilings and walls to the great inglenook fireplace in the dining room and the wood-burning stove in the drawing room.

SPECIAL TIMES
"The timber framed part of the house is the oldest", the owner explains.
“Most of the rooms in the older part have beautiful beams, where the original timber frame is exposed,” he says. “The main rooms in the house are all a good size.”
There have been many happy occasions in the welcoming cottage over the years.
“The dining room is lovely at Christmas when the fire is roaring,” he says. “We always have family here and have a wonderful time.”
And his wife adds: “Our daughter also got married from this house – that was a very special occasion.”

SHENLEY TOOT
The location of The Homestead has been perfect, according to the owners.
“Just about 600m away we have shops, a GP’s practice and a nice pub,” he says. “We are close to parks and woods, and other great places to walk.”
Just a short stroll away from The Homestead is an area of green open space, which is locally known as The Toot. This is a scheduled ancient monument and is a pleasant place to walk. In 1239 AD it was a moated motte and bailey castle, home to the family of Hugh Earl of Chester.

CONVENIENT PLACE
Shenley Wood is also close by; this is one of three ancient woodlands in Milton Keynes and is a wonderful spot to explore and see the wildlife. In the summer months, the meadow area on the west side of the wood is mown so visitors can enjoy picnics and relax among the wildflowers.
For additional shopping and leisure facilities, central Milton Keynes is easy to access and if the owners wish to travel further afield they are just three minutes from the A5 and 10 minutes from the M1.
“We have enjoyed living here and hope to stay close by when we move,” he says. “We will miss everything about this house. It has been an incredible place to live.”

Setting The Scene

A private driveway leads to The Homestead and opens up to a parking area for multiple vehicles. There is also an outbuilding with storage and an open wood shed or car port.
The beautiful, mature gardens wrap around the property offering excellent privacy. At the back of the house there is an entertaining terrace.
“There are lots of places in the garden to sit out and enjoy the sunshine and the peace,” says the current owner.
