The meadow and woodland is a County Wildlife Site and is considered to be an important niche habitat for many species of wild flowers includingorchids. The woodland is known as Middlecott Wood and comprises a variety ofdeciduous trees including a number of large mature oaks which stand alongsidethe central flowing watercourse.
Nestled to the centre of the property is acollection of disused mine workings forming part of the well known Atlas mine ofIlsington which comprises a substantial stone building previously used as a “BurningHouse”. The structure is one of the finest and well preserved examples inEngland and measures approximately 40’ x 15’ with its internal space separated betweena working chamber and two furnaces. The roof is constructed from a timber frameand clad with sheets of corrugated iron. Affixed to the side of the building isthe original stack which is constructed from stone and brick and can be seenstanding proud amongst the surrounding mature vegetation. Other notablefeatures of this historic site include a former aqueduct and launder mount, huge water wheel pit, a small disused quarry to the Southern boundary (from which Ilsington church was built) and a number of channelled watercourses.
