This is a deceptively spacious house that is full of character and really needs to be viewed in person to appreciate it in full.

History of Crosshands House

There are no records of buildings at Crosshands before approximately 1760 when a new main road between Mauchline and Kilmarnock was built to allow a faster route for the mail coaches. This subsequently became the A76.

Crosshands House was built as a Coaching Inn at the same time as the new road and was initiallynamed the Danfoss Inn. The stable for the inn was built next door, now Stables Cottage.
The road to Tarbolton was originally on the south side of the house and the fields to the north came right up to the house. If you stand in the 'back' garden you'll see that this is indeed the front of the house with the central door and symmetrical windows and dormers.

The walls that separate the two living rooms from the hallway at the bottom of the stairs are not
original; the downstairs was a large, continuous room with a fireplace at each end and the stairs in the middle. It would have been similar in design and appearance to the meeting room of the famous Bachelor's Club in nearby Tarbolton.

The garage under the house was a cattle-shed and the beasts entered from the field through what is now the utility room. Above this, where now there are two bedrooms, was a hay loft.

Robert Burns
From 1784 to 1788 the world-famous, Scottish writer Robert Burns lived at nearby Mossgiel Farm which is just over a mile away. He was certainly not a drunkard, but it is well recorded that he enjoyed a social drink. So, Crosshands House was a pub when he was a neighbour. We have no direct evidence, but it seems highly likely that Robert Burns would have been a regular visitor!

The single storey extension to the main house which now includes the kitchen, bathroom and dining room was added, we believe, sometime in the mid-19th century. It's believed that the house was owned at the time by a joiner who lived above his workshop. He had injured his back and could no longer climb the stairs, so his family built the extension to allow him to continue to live and workhere.

The Smithy 35'1" x 18'5"
Around the end of the 19th century the blacksmith's workshop was built across the road from
Crosshands House. Subsequently the road was moved to the north side of the house leaving the
smithy easily accessible across the driveway.

In the middle of the 20th century a corrugated iron building was built next to the smithy and
operated as a petrol station. It was subsequently moved to a nearby farm where it is still in use and the place where it stood is now part of the garden.
