HOW TO GET THERE TQ9 7UP. Leave Totnes on the A381 Kingsbridge road. Towards the top of the hill turn left, signposted Ashprington and Cornworthy. Continue to Ashprington and turn left at the memorial and Askew Cottage is just after the church, on the left.
ASHPRINGTON Ashprington is something of a picture postcard village, and one of a handful of South Hams villages regarded as particularly sought after, due to its pretty properties and its close proximity to both Totnes and the River Dart. It is a quiet village, with little through traffic, a 14th century church, a village hall, the Durant Arms and two pubs, the Waterman's Arms and the Maltsters Arms on the banks of the Dart within a brisk walk. Close to the village, the Sharpham Estate includes the renowned vineyard and dairy that produces world class wine and cheese.
Totnes, within about 2 miles, is known as an Elizabethan town but has much earlier origins with a castle, a wonderful position on the River Dart and a main line railway station. It has a well regarded community college, full range of shops, a weekly market and a wide choice of cultural facillites.
THE PROPERTY Standing in a conservation area in what is arguably the Totnes area's most sought after village, Askew Cottage is said to be one of the oldest in Ashprington. As its name suggests, it is a cottage with an irregular room layout and it's full of character with old fireplaces, timber beams and leaded windows. Upgraded over recent years, its kitchen has granite work surfaces, some windows are double glazed and there's oil fired central heating. Outside, there is a pretty, enclosed garden with a carport at the end and a sunny, private courtyard with Indian paving on the cottage's south side.
Askew Cottage has plenty of potential. A previous owner obtained planning consent in 2011 for a new bedroom & ensuite bathroom over ground floor bedroom/shower room and another consent in December 2014 to extend the dining room. The 2011 consent has expired, but the second remains valid until December 2017. See the plans at http://tinyurl.com/nglm27x and at http://tinyurl.com/occ2fqw
