We bought the old hotel just before the new Millennium, and I remember we came here at midnight on New Years Eve to light some fireworks on the roof. Well, as it turned out we didnt need to, as the view across Manchester was phenomenal. It looked like a colourful Arabian carpet shooting into the sky. In fact, it was that night that really made us decide to add another level onto the original building and create a home that made the most of that view. 
With just eighteen apartments in the main building, the development is small and intimate. It has been kept small to maintain how beautifully quiet it is. It has also been created as a gated community so it has a real feeling of security, and would make an ideal home to lock up and leave for someone who travels. 
The penthouse has its own ground floor entrance and self-contained apartment suitable for a nanny, granny, or teenager. The separate apartment also has its own private entrance and patio, but with an internal staircase that links it to the main property. 
Inside the penthouse we knew we had to create something special to suit its incredible location. We've created a space thats incredibly light and airy. The main living area has a vaulted ceiling with a gallery above and a spiral staircase leading up to the master bedroom suite. The kitchen is handmade by Mark Wilkinson and the bathrooms have Jacob Delafon fittings. and if the three private patio areas are not enough for you to enjoy the view, there is the amazing window that starts on the floor of the living room and extends up through the floor to the bedroom ceiling. You can see across five counties from that window, watch the planes land at Manchester airport below you, or view across to the hills to the east of Stoke on Trent, some 70 miles away. 
With such an outlook and the peaceful environment, it is hard to remember the penthouse is just 15 minutes outside Manchester city centre. Not surprisingly this is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Just 800 yards away you can walk to what they call The Forgotten Valley which has not changed for 300 years, and is just beautiful, says Brett. The Metro link into Bury takes just ten minutes, and the M66 and M62 motorways are nearby. 
Looking at the penthouse he has created, is Brett pleased with the result? This is the most incredible property I have ever created, he says, and I doubt I will ever get the chance to do something quite so amazing ever again. In fact we won the Innovations in Interiors Award presented by the Concept of Living Magazine in 2001, and 2002 for this development. The location, the space, and the opportunity have all come together to create a unique home.
