The Story

CHARACTER AND CHARM
The Gables dates back to 1874 and was sympathetically extended
during the 1970s.
It was originally a traditional Victorian cottage and there are lots of
little indents and nooks and crannies in the old part of the house, as
well as the gables, which add to its character. The new part of the
house blends beautiful with the old cottage. It is nestled behind
what was once the old Victorian schoolroom, and has two front
doors - one of which opens to a hidden passageway to their back
garden. It feels like you are escaping to a secret garden away from
the rest of the world.
FAMILY KITCHEN
In the old part of the house is the fabulous kitchen and breakfast
room.
Two of the old downstairs rooms have been combined to create
one large kitchen and breakfast room, which stretches from the
front of the house to the back and is always filled with sunlight. They
spend a lot of their time in the kitchen as it is such a welcoming,
sociable space. Someone can be cooking while others are sitting at
the table chatting. There are windows all around the room, giving
views of the garden. At the end of the kitchen a door leads into the
old Victorian washroom which is now are fantastic large and
modern utility room, perfect for family life.
ENDLESS SPACE
There are four reception rooms on the ground floor offering great
versatility.
One of the things they most loved about the house was its
flexibility. The rooms can be used in so many different ways
depending on your needs. There is also plenty of room for
everyone to have their own space – whether you want an office for
work, a playroom, a study area for teenagers or simply an inviting
place to escape to. The drawing room is one of their favourite
rooms as it always feels peaceful and tranquil. There are sliding
glass doors which open to the garden, and whatever the time of
year, it is the perfect spot to sit, relax and chat or simply enjoy the
views.
BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS
The house has five bedrooms – four of which are large doubles -
including a fabulous master suite. Their master suite is in the old
part of the house, with two of the old cottage bedrooms turned
into to make one large room – with a square archway between. It is
a wonderful charming room, filled with sunlight and fantastic views
of the garden and surrounding hamlet. It has its own sitting room
area, which is really cosy and they have a sofa and table in there. It is
a great place to enjoy your morning cup of tea. There is so much
space upstairs – and again it has great flexibility - they use one of
the bedrooms as a study and another as a dressing room.
SECRET GARDEN
The Gables is set in pretty, secluded gardens with mature flower
beds, shrubs and trees.
They wanted it to feel a bit like a secret garden and they have
created little hidden away sections, with a path running among the
trees and shrubs.
They also have a lovely terrace where we often eat during the
summer months. With the drawing room doors open, it creates a
fabulous space for entertaining or special occasions.
It is a wonderfully quirky house set in a historic, picturesque village,
next to a famous medieval church – it is a charming place to be.

Setting The Scene

The Gables is in the historic, sought after hamlet of Broughton
Village, nestled close to the beautiful church, famous for its medieval
paintings.
It is an idyllic, quintessentially English setting and the gardens reflect
that sense of peace and tranquillity, with plenty of hidden areas to
escape to among the trees and shrubs.
There are substantial gardens to the front and side with ample
parking for several cars. A secret doorway leads to a tranquil rear
garden, surrounded by mature trees.
There is a large lawn, mature shrubs and a sunny terrace, perfect for
entertaining.
Just a short stroll from the property is Broughton Brook, with
woodland and park areas, nature trails and plenty of walks to enjoy.
