The Old Canonry has a fascinating and intriguing history and is Grade I Listed. In 1282, Archbishop Peckham founded Wingham College and The Old Canonry is believed to have been used as accommodation for minor canons; the undercroft and part of the house dates from that period. The bulk of the remainder of the house is believed to date from the 15th Century and is a good example of Tudor architecture. The interior is equally impressive, with magnificent timber framing and a particularly fine dragon beam in the drawing room. The dining room is a light room, a great place for intimate or formal dining. The kitchen is to the rear of the house and has lovely views over the garden.
Off the kitchen is the family room, a relaxing space ideal for teenagers with a door to the outside. The hallway, off which is a bathroom, has access to the first floor, where there is a bedroom and a jack and jill bathroom, which is shared with the master bedroom. This is a magnificent room with a vaulted ceiling and exposed crown post; the room has its own private staircase from the drawing room. Bedroom 3, another characterful room, and bedroom 4 are accessed off a staircase that rises from the dining room. There is a further bathroom at this level.
Wingham is a thriving village with a useful range of local amenities and shops including post office, greengrocers, village store, pubs, doctors surgery, dentist and a well-regarded primary school. Nearby Canterbury, with its wide range of cultural, sporting, shopping and recreational amenities, also has some of the best performing state and private schools in the Government league tables.
There are excellent road and rail links. The A2/M2 can be joined just south of Canterbury at Bridge (approx. 6 miles) and links with the remaining southern motorway systems, Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Canterburys two mainline stations offer a variety of commuter and stopping services to London, with the High Speed service to London St Pancras taking just under an hour from Canterbury West. The area has good access to the Continent.
Outside, a newly converted outbuilding provides an office and a utility room. The gardens are a delightful haven, giving high levels of privacy. Recently landscaped, there is a wide terrace immediately to the rear of the house giving onto an area of lawn. Well stocked raised beds give a good display of colour throughout the seasons. To the side of the house are a very useful, secure parking area and a good sized garage.
