Faringdon is a pretty Market town set midway between Oxford and Swindon, well by-passed many years ago so as to leave the centre vibrant and lively but free from heavy traffic. The town offers a good variety of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants as well as Tesco and Budgens supermarkets and a Waitrose is currently under construction. Excellent schools in and close to the town, both primary and secondary.
Lord Berners, talented musician, writer, artist and eccentric, lived at Faringdon House from 1931 and amongst other things, is famous for having dyed a flock of doves, bright colours - hence the pink plastic birds that can be see on various window sills dotted around the town. He was responsible for the construction of the 100ft tower, Faringdon Folly, in 1935 complete with the darkly comic notice to the public at the entrance.
Directions - DIRECTIONS: From Wantage take the A417 and at the A420 roundabout, turn right towards Oxford and then first left into Faringdon. This becomes London Street and No.51 will be found on your right hand side before you reach the Market Place.
