What the vendors say: Dating from around the 1700's, the White House is the oldest house in West Norwood. Over the years, it has been used for many things. It is reported to have been the Country residence of the Astronomer Royal. It had a laundry to the left; it was a teaching school, and a dance school, and during the war it was an ARP station. We know the left side housed the Stables and hay loft above and the main house had servant quarters in the basement with the main residence upstairs. As the cost of upkeep increased, it was used as a guest house for well over 30 years.

The Mark family, namely, Walter Mark moved in circa 120 years ago. Walter was a builder and built many 100's of residences all over South London. He also was acquainted with Sir Hiram Maxim (the inventor of the machine gun).One project that we think he worked on was the Maxim flying machine. (I have a picture on the press launch day with Walter and Hiram on the balcony together watching the press on the lower balcony).

One of his sons George, had three children, who were all born in what is now the dining room. Two of those children lived most if not all of their life together with their children and in one case children's children, so it has been a real family house.

Since then many changes have happened in West Norwood except at the White House. One of those children was my father, so I am the fourth generation at the White House. However, the time has now arrived for me to move on and let go, as I have a fantastic opportunity to expand my business. Such growth and development can be best served at a different location.

It is my sincere hope and good wish that the new custodian will have a long and happy association with the White House and enjoy their time here as much as I have done.
