HARTLEBURY

Hartlebury is the most northerly parish in the district of Wychavon in the county of Worcestershire. It borders Kidderminster and Stourport in the Wyre Forest as well as the parishes of Elmley Lovett and Ombersley to the south. It is a large and varied parish, with fine agricultural land, historic buildings, residential areas, several trading estates, good motorway connections via the A449 and the mainline train station.

There are 15 hamlets in Hartlebury, of which Waresley is one. The centre of the village has been designated a conservation area and is mainly a rural residential area which is growing constantly. To the north-west of the parish is Hartlebury Common, 216 acres of rare, dry lowland heath with a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is a great place for dog walking.

Hartlebury Castle, built in the mid 13th century was formerly home to the Bishop of Worcester for more than 1000 years. It houses the magnificent and historically significant Hurd Library of rare and ancient books. Parishioners and others from across Worcestershire have been working in recent years to preserve the castle and this integral library for public use. Worcestershire County Museum occupies the north wing.

The parish has good transport links, with a regular bus service between Kidderminster and Worcester. The railway station is on the main Hereford to Birmingham line offering a service to both Worcester and Birmingham. The A449 Kidderminster to Worcester road has easy access to the M5 motorway.

Village life thrives within Hartlebury with a post office and general store, farm shops, a petrol station, 3 public houses, 2 churches, a hairdresser, an independent school and a primary school that caters for 4 -11 year olds. The village hall built in the 1950s by parishioners and still managed by a trust of local people, is used regularly.
