Historical Note: Keppel Lodge is named after Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel, who was lodged here in 1748 pending court martial when he was accused of allowing a French ship which he was pursuing to escape during the war of the Austrian succession. Honorably acquitted, he had a successful naval career becoming 1st Sea Lord in 1782 and at one point being MP for Chichester from 1755 to 1761.

This pretty harbour-side town on the boundary of Hampshire and Sussex is extremely popular and it is not hard to see why. It has retained a good collection of local shops, pretty pubs and noteworthy restaurants, including 36 on the Quay and the highly recommended Fat Olives. Emsworth Sailing Club and Slipper Sailing Club are both nearby together with Emsworth Marina, and the town still retains a small fishing fleet. Despite its idyllic setting, Emsworth is extremely accessible with good road and rail links to London (especially since the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel), Havant Station providing a mainline service to Waterloo in 1 hour 25 minutes. The city of Portsmouth is only 10 miles away. The cathedral city of Chichester lies 9 miles to the east, home to the internationally famous Festival Theatre and Pallant House Gallery which houses one of the country's most important modern art collections outside London. The surrounding countryside provides a wide choice of recreational facilities, including Goodwood with its famous racecourse, private health club and airfield. Its Annual Festival of Speed and the Revival of the historic motor circuit have also become prominent annual events on the social calendar. Chichester Harbour and the waters of the Solent are some of the most popular and easily accessible sailing facilities from London, and the beaches of West Wittering, East Head and Sandy Point draw many visitors each year with facilities for windsurfing, kite surfing and land boarding.
