Abbeyfield Canvey Island-

Abbeyfield is a national organisation providing housing with professional car for older people.

The first Abbeyfield house opened in Bermondsey London in 1956. Abbeyfield is now throughout the Country and provides two types of accommodation. In our ‘Sheltered Housing’ residents generally look after themselves but a housekeeper provides two meals a day. In ‘Extra Care Houses’ residents have 24 hour care although they are not nursing homes.

The first Abbeyfield house on Canvey Island opened in 1959. It become home to those who were no longer able or willing to live alone. They found care, friendship and security at Abbeyfield.

Our house in Long Road is about 400 yards from Furtherwick Road. It provides ‘Sheltered Housing’ for eleven residents in single rooms which are mainly en-suite. There is a lift for access to the upper floor.

A committee of local volunteers manages each house. Throughout the Country, over 12000 volunteers give their time and help to support house residents and staff.

Every resident is special...

Abbeyfield house in Long Road aims to be a caring family toe every resident.

Residents enjoy privacy and independence in their own pleasantly decorated room which their own key. They furnish their room and are warmly encouraged to being well-loved pieces of furniture and belongings to their new home.

Every room has a television, aerial sockets and private telephone connection point. Telephone costs are borne by the resident if a telephone is installed.

Staff always remember that every room is a home and never forget that they are privileged visitors.

Call buttons in every room are personal pendant alarms connected to Careline to ensure that residents are in tough with immediate help twenty-four hours a day.

Our shared facilities...

Our communal rooms are pleasant meeting places for our residents. They can enjoy a shared hobby or just relax and talk.

On the ground floor there is a lounge where coffee and tea is served and a dining room. A two course cooked lunch and substantial high tea with home-made cakes are provided every day. Residents special dietary requirements are catered for.

The sheltered gardens are beautifully kept with a terraced walkway and pleasant seating.

Maintaining independence...

In Abbeyfield Houses residents come and go as they please. They make breakfast in their own room and then can enjoy their time as they choose.

We are proud of our genuine family atmosphere and friendship. Outings with friends or with our own team of helpers and volunteers keep our residents up and active.

We always welcome visitors who can join residents for meals for a small charge.

As well as furnishing their room to their own taste, residents provide their own linen, including towels. There is a modern- well-equipped laundry room and they are encouraged to maintain their independence by attending to their own laundry. Help is available of required.

A hairdresser calls every week but for those who like a walk, there are also hairdressers in the town centre. The post office, branches of major banks and the library are also nearby.

Our Lady of Canvey Catholic Church and St Nicholas (C of E) Church are in Long Road and Canvey Island Senior Citizens Association (CISCA) have a purpose built meeting place a short walk away. There are several shops in the area but breakfast and beverage supplies are provided in the house.

Our staff care...

We have a small dedicated team whose job is to enable residents to enjoy life to the full. Either our General Manager or one of her three housekeepers is on site during the day to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

We provide ourselves on our high standards of cleanliness. Out staff clean all rooms daily but residents are encouraged to make their bed and to help with minor domestic chores like watering the plants and preparing vegetables if they wish to.

Although we cannot provide full nursing care at Abbeyfield we keep an eye on our residents and would always care for them whilst suffering from minor illness. Several doctors have surgeries ion the locality and residents who have lived locally usually stay with their own practice.

How we manage the house...

Every Abbeyfield house is a self sufficient unit. The executive committee of The Abbeyfield Canvey Island Society manages the budget and premises and appoints staff, ensuring that the house meets all legal requirements. The Executive Committee want to guarantee that for all our residents.
