West Hampstead is in northwest London. Until the late 19th century, the locale was but a small village called West End. What can be described as modern West Hampstead emerged with the arrival of the railways with the area being transformed from farm land to houses. Geographically, as it name implies, it is to the west of Hampstead (it was actually named after its railroad staion which is on West End Lane, the main road of the area) with Swiss Cottage to the East and Frognal to the north.
