Woolwich has enjoyed a small renaissance. Several High Street chains previously absent from Woolwich have opened branches, i.e. Marks and Spencer, New Look, Sainsburys and WH Smith among others. Longer-established shops have been refurbished. The new terminus of the Docklands Light Railway's London City Airport branch, Woolwich Arsenal station, opened on 10 January 2009 these both take you to Central London in a matter of minutes.
A large-scale redevelopment of the area around Love Lane called Woolwich Central, near the eastern end of Powis Street, commenced in 2011. The project includes demolition of several buildings including the Post Office, Crown Building, Peggy Middleton House and Thomas Spencer Halls of Residence, and the construction of new council offices called the Woolwich Centre, housing the new Library along with other services ( opened in August 2011 ) also housing, local shops and the largest branch of Tesco in Western Europe. Located across the River Thames from Woolwich, London City Airport is less than 10 minutes from Woolwich Arsenal by DLR. The airport provides scheduled flights to destinations across Europe and a direct service to New York. With check-in times for passengers carrying only had luggage as little as 20 minutes on some flights and 2-hour hold luggage check-in standard on most services, London City also offers a choice of relaxation and refreshment areas.
Woolwich is very well served by regular bus services, with connections to the North Greenwich Peninsular (routes 422 and 472) and central London (route 53) within walking distance. Greenwich and Blackheath (routes 380 and 386) are also accessible by bus, along with many other destinations across South London and North-West Kent
Woolwich residents can join Streetcar, the world's largest pay-as-you-go car club. Vehicles are available for all residents who take up the membership offer
