ABOUT ILKESTON
With a population of around 40,000, Ilkeston (or Ilson to those in the know) is the third largest town in Derbyshire, with a full complement of services and amenities. It is closer to Nottingham than it is to Derby and less than five miles from the M1. A train station is due to open in Ilkeston this year (2015), adding to its accessibility and appeal, once the Great Crested Newts have been rehomed.
Formerly a coal-mining town, it has managed to remain a thriving retail and business district and it still has strong industrial links with major iron production works in the area, as well as textile and upholstery manufacture. A host of new retailers are either opening stores or looking for new space here.
The Market Place in Ilkeston is the site of a Charter fair, one of the largest street fairs in Europe (and at over 760 years old, surely one of the oldest).
The Town Hall dates back to 1868, parts of the St Mary's Church back to around 1200. For those keen on more active entertainment, there's also a 10-pin bowling alley and an 18-hole golf course.
