Swanley developed from the Saxon term 'Swine-ley', "Ley" meaning a clearing in the woods and "swine" meaning pigs. Originally it was a Saxon pig’s farm which later developed into what we now know as Swanley. In the 6th and 7th Centuries, there were probably two homesteads.
