HISTORY OF MOUNT WISE.
Mount Wise has a long and illustrious history spanning more than 200 years. Having been in government control since the early 1800's, only a privileged few have had access to the 28 acre site.

Admiralty House, previously names Government House, was the private residence of the Lieutenant-Governor of the Plymouth Garrison. It then passed onto the General Office Commanding, in charge of the entire military in the West Country before becoming the Port Admiral's House in the early 20th Century.

Over history the house has witnessed many key events in world history and has welcomed a long list of distinguished guests, including Sir Winston Churchill, King George V and the Queen Mother.

Mount Wise House, a magnificent Georgian building within the site, which was previously two buildings, was the Admiral's office whilst he resided in the neighboring Hamoaze House.

From the edge of the lawn in front of Admiralty House, the view is quite literally like looking back in time.

To the left is the majestic Royal William Yard. Built in the 1800s, the Yard was a major depot of the Royal navy and included a bakery, brewery, cooperage and residencies. Today it is a Grade II listed development with galleries, offices and bars.

Look straight across to Mount Edgecombe to see the beach where Charles Darwin set off on his Voyage of Discovery in December 1831, or look to the right to see the Scott Memorial. Unveiled in 1925, the statue commemorates the expedition to the South Pole and those perished on the return journey in 1912.

With old gun emplacements, the oldest dry dock in the country and a number of listed buildings of historical significance, Mount Wise is at the heart of a uniquely historic location.
