Additional historical information
Clients have kindly provided us with historical information relating to the granary.
Records show that it was originally called The Gaze House. A building of this name is recorded in documents going back to 1302 and was thought to be the building from which monks kept a lookout for cattle thieves from Stansted. (Monks Hill, situated approximately a quarter of a mile to the North becomes more relevant).
Two stone lion masks are inserted into the wall of the Granary Barn probably substantially earlier to the barn and are of historical interest and need to be preserved.
This information comes from letters from the Oldfields, who occupied Norman House from a book 'Bourne in the Past' by J H Mee (1913).
Further information could possibly be obtained from the archivists at county hall Chichester, West Sussex.
