Aylesbury - a pleasant semi-rural setting near London

Buckinghamshire's county town is a magnet for young families looking to make their home in a semi-rural location somewhere with good schools and direct train links to London.

One of the post-war "overspill" areas, the town has more than doubled in population since the 1960s, so there are plenty of local amenities, and a lively night-time scene.

Property in Aylesbury includes semi-detached Victorian villas with good-sized gardens, and sensitively designed apartment blocks close to the centre. The heart of the town has several attractive squares and streets, such as Temple and Pebble Lane, along with period property from medieval to Victorian.

For modern homes, look in the more suburban areas. Some of the most popular parts of the town include the Conservation Area around St. Mary's Church and Queens Park, and particularly the properties which face on to the canal.

Steeped in history

Aylesbury is a historic town with some lovely old buildings and dwellings from historic times such as Georgian, medieval and Victorian periods, not forgetting the twentieth century Ceely House, part of the County Museum. The King's Head, dating back to 1455, is one of the country's best-preserved coaching inns.

While there are all the shops and restaurants you'd expect in a town of this size, Milton Keynes and Bicester Shopping Village are not far away. For outdoor exercise, Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon offer magnificent views.

The town's Waterside Theatre, which seats 1,200, opened in October 2010, surrounded by the £100m Waterside redevelopment project.

Aylesbury has a further education college, three grammar schools, two special schools, two community upper schools, an academy and a string of primary schools.

Aylesbury's travel links

Aylesbury is connected to the A41, which traverses from Birkenhead to London, with the A418 and A413 also passing the town. The M40's junction 9 is less than 15 miles away, and the M25 just over 20 miles away.

There are up to five hourly train trains to London, and the capital can be reached within 60 minutes. There are also regular services to High Wycombe, mostly indirect, and you can reach Birmingham by changing at Prices Risborough.

In 2005, Aylesbury won a funding grant £1m to be one of six English towns to be used for Cycling Demonstrations. This meant that the county council could promote cycling and provide facilities for cyclists, from bike lockers and stands to cycle-friendly crossings.

With its good transport links, local facilities, easy access to city and countryside, not to mention a strong sense of history, Aylesbury could offer your family just the quality of life you long for.
