Chichester- canal, coast, countryside and culture!

Chichester is small but delightfully formed, and one of the UK's best preserved Georgian cities. It's also a cultural hub, thanks to Chichester Festival Theatre, the Oxmarket Arts Centre and the Pallant House Gallery. A three-week arts and music festival takes place in the city each July. The broad streets of West Sussex's prosperous administrative capital, home to three tiers of local government, are packed with notable buildings, with the twelfth century cathedral towering over all of them. A compact pedestrianised centre within the ancient city walls offers some great shopping.

Homes to suit everyone

Property in Chichester varies from characterful Grade II listed buildings to more modern housing suitable for young families. So, whether you're looking for a retirement home or a first step on the housing ladder, this town is bound to have something you'll love. Within the ring road, a string of conservation areas incorporates nice Victorian terraces and bigger semis. Chichester also has some attractive canal-side developments. Average house prices in Chichester do tend to be higher than in surrounding areas, but by no means anywhere is it prohibitively expensive. As well as in-demand Georgian town houses and period detached properties in the Harbour villages, there are more affordable suburban detacheds, semis, terraces, flats and cottages. Along with all the city's important buildings, from the medieval Market Cross to the Guildhall in Priory Park, the partially restored Chichester Canal is an attractive enhancement. Stroll along the banks of the canal and out into the countryside. Nearby, Chichester Harbour, a safe haven for shipping in Roman times, is a sailing playground and a well-cared for wildlife habitat. The South Downs are also nearby, and the area has plenty of routes for long-distance hikers. Local parkland is plentiful, the highlight being Priory Park, which is encased in the city walls, with the remains of Chichester Castle and the Guildhall as its centrepiece.

A travel hub

Chichester is a transport hub, with the A27 coastal trunk road, linking Eastbourne and Southampton, on its doorstep, connecting the city with the M27. The A259 has a junction on the A27, while there are also three A roads giving Chichester access to the north. There are regular rail services to London Victoria, Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Southampton and Portsmouth. The city has three secondary schools, while in the primary sector parents also have a choice, with options ranging from infant-only to all-level schools, a Roman Catholic primary and two special needs primaries. Chichester is also a university city. With coast, countryside, history and amazing architecture all on your doorstep, not to mention a buzzing arts scene, Chichester offers a truly superb quality of life and has universal appeal across the generations.
