Hastings - a home in 1066 country!

Just over 50 miles south east of London, the coastal town of Hastings offers a cosmopolitan, buzzing atmosphere, a thriving artistic community and a strong local music scene within an attractive setting that includes a well preserved Old Town. The resort still has England's largest beach-based fishing fleet.

Hastings is, in reality, more like three towns in one, linked together by a promenade. In the East lies the Old Town, in the middle the modern shopping centre and to the west, St Leonards, with its elegant architecture and the popular Norman Road full of vintage galleries and antique shops.

Property in Hastings is a mixture of modern and period buildings - from the historic homes of the Old Town to the post-war bungalows and flats of the town's suburban areas. Much of it is still relatively affordable, and it's easy to find somewhere five minutes from the sea, shops and station.

White Rock is an attractive cluster of Georgian and Victorian terraces above the centre, with stunning views over the Castle, and near local amenities. The Old Town attracts artists and other creative freelancers, bringing to Hastings art galleries and plenty of character and atmosphere.

Hastings Castle, built in 1070 by the Normans, and standing on West Hill overlooking the town centre, was the first castle that William the Conqueror built in England. It is a Grade I listed building, mainly comprising the chapel arch, dungeons and some of the original walls.

Lively cultural scene

With two local theatres, a cinema and four museums, including the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, there is always something going on. The Jerwood Gallery is a new arts venue in the Stade, Hastings Old Town.

There's no shortage of breathing space, either, thanks to open areas like Alexandra Park and Hastings Country Park, comprising more than 600 acres of ancient woodland, grassland and heathland over fives miles of cliffs and rugged terrain.

Well connected, well schooled

The A21 leads to London, and Hastings is also served by the A259 coastal road, along with the original London road, the A2100 to Battle. The A28 goes to Kent, and the A27 also starts nearby.

There are rail links to the capital, Brighton and Ashford, with the train journey to London taking around an hour and a half.

And, with 18 primary and five secondary schools, this is a well educated town! Brighton University manages University Centre Hastings, opened in 2003 as the main campus of Sussex Coast College, the town's further education base.

Given Hastings' unique character and feel, its amenities and its superb coastal setting near lovely countryside, it's no wonder so many locals insist they would never live anywhere else.
