Lovely Lancaster is steeped in history

Lancaster is the city that gives Lancashire its name and its rich heritage keeps visitors flocking there every year. It is situated on the River Lune, with coastal neighbour Morecambe Bay lying just three miles away.

The town has strong links with the monarchy, dating back to when the House of Lancaster was a branch of the English Royal Family. Its history is based around the port and canal, dominated by the charismatic Lancaster Castle.

Property in Lancaster is rich and varied, and prices remain steady despite a fluctuating market. Traditional and new build blend well in this lovely town, and flats and conversions are always popular with the student population.

Georgian architecture dominates the city and many buildings along St George's Quay date from the 19th century when the port was one of the busiest in the UK. It is mainly a service-orientated city, but in recent years a high technology centre has grown as a result of IT companies investing in the city.

Lancaster University is a research university and one of the top 10 universities in the United Kingdom. The area also boasts many good secondary schools.

Soak up Lancaster's rich heritage

The emblem of the House of Lancaster is a red rose, while the emblem of the House of York is a white rose. The history of the War of the Roses is today reflected in the sporting rivalry between the two shires.

Perhaps surprisingly, water polo is the most successful sport in the Lancaster area, and the town is home to the top team in the United Kingdom.

Ideally placed on the map

The city is easily accessed from the M6 via junctions 33-35 and is located on the West Coast inter-city main line. The Trans Pennine Express provides direct services from Manchester Airport and Edinburgh. There is also an excellent bus service, and students can buy discount Megarider tickets.

Lancaster is a wonderful snapshot of English history and is a settled, prosperous town which is benefiting from new investment and the wide variety of properties on the market.
