Love living in Leicester!

The largest city in the East Midlands, Leicester lies on the River Soar at the edge of the English National Forest, and boasts a unique, richly diverse heritage.

One of England's oldest cities, Leicester has a history that stretches back at least two thousand years. It was one of Roman Britain's most important centres, and the remains of the Roman baths can be seen at the Jewry Wall.

Since it underwent extensive regeneration in the 1980s and 1990s, there's never been a better time to live in Leicester.

A varied property market

Property in Leicester includes everything one would expect to find in a city of this size, from the usual new developments of modern family homes to terraces and late-Victorian and Edwardian villas.

Just outside the city, there are period Georgian and Regency properties, old stone cottages, farmhouses and former rectories, at prices that remain affordable.

Commerce has always been vital to Leicester, from the famous 700-year-old covered market, one of Europe's biggest, to the thousands of flourishing businesses in the city today.

One of the great engines of Victorian industry, Leicester has retained its market town character, despite having the largest economy in the East Midlands.

Around a third of the workforce is still in manufacturing - generally textiles and clothing, but also other industries including electronics, food and drink, printing and plastics.

Superb travel connections

Excellent transport links extend from Leicester across the UK via road, rail and air connections. London is 99 miles and an hour and eight minutes away by the fastest train. Birmingham and Peterborough can be reached in 46 minutes and an hour respectively, Sheffield is an hour away, and Leeds and York two hours, Nottingham just half an hour.

The city is close to Junction 21 of the M1, and to the M69, while East Midlands Airport is also easily accessible, and there are good bus and coach services.

With nightlife to satisfy the most determined hedonist, Leicester's cosmopolitan nature also means there are restaurants serving dishes from around the world. Try Melton Road for some of England's finest Indian cuisine.

For shopaholics, big brand products can be found in Leicester's 2 large indoor shopping malls - the Haymarket and the Shires Centre. For designer labels and original ideas, the smaller, independent retailers of St Martin's and the Leicester Lanes are ideal.

With nearly 30 secondary schools to choose from in the city, Leicester is also home to two universities. The University of Leicester is one of few to specialise in space science, and the National Space Centre is nearby.

With plenty of parks and gardens, and surrounded by delightful countryside, the city has plenty of breathing space.

There's also a thriving cultural scene, including museums, the Caribbean Carnival and the international short film festival. Historic buildings such as the Town Hall and the Church of St Mary de Castro give the place plenty of character.

With so much going for it, what's not to love about living in Leicester?
