Around Manchester Cathedral, the Millennium Quarter - incorporating Shambles Square, Exchange Square and Cathedral Gardens - has been extensively redeveloped, making another potentially very attractive base.

Large-scale redevelopment has taken place in Spinningfield, to the west of the city centre. Castlefield in the southwest is another area to try, and in the east of Chinatown.

The "Conference Quarter" near GMEX, Bridgewater Hall and Manchester Convention Centre is full of offices, smart bars and accommodation.

Piccadilly, with the city centre's largest public square and most important transport interchange, runs east from the end of Market Street to the beginning of London Road.

Spending time in and around Manchester

For shopping, the Trafford and Arndale centres and Deansgate provide some of the UK's top retail hotspots.

When you need to get out of the city, road and rail links are impeccable. For breathing space, try somewhere like 650-acre Heaton Park, just north of the city centre.

One thing is for sure - from the Royal Exchange Theatre to the Lowry Gallery to the MEN Arena to the string of museums and art exhibitions to the hustle and bustle of Market Street, there is so much to enjoy in Manchester city centre that you won't be in any rush to leave this dynamic hub.
