Reading Overview

Reading is large town with a borough population of 144,000 and is a popular spot for commuters who work in London. The bustling centre is surrounded by beautiful countryside, thatched cottages and numerous small towns and villages. Reading's main attractions include the medieval abbey ruins, the rural surroundings and the river Thames and Kennet.

In the past ten years central Reading has transformed into a metropolitan centre with developments and apartment blocks spotted around the town. It has introduced The Oracles, a modern shopping centre, while Broad Street and Broad Street Mall are still shopping favourites.

Reading offers a lively nightlife in order to cater for the abundance of students settled in the town. The bar circuit is quite compact due to the size of the town and there is an excellent variety of popular haunts from student pubs to sophisticated cocktail bars.

Although Reading has yet to achieve 'city' status, it houses two universities with a large student population. The University of Reading and Thames Valley University ranked 45th and 77th respectively in the Guardian's University League Table for 2011.

Every year Reading hosts the Reading Music Festival attracting thousands of revellers each summer. It was twinned with Leeds Festival back in 1999 and hosts an array of popular music artists.

The Reading Half Marathon is also held in March and can attract up to 16,000 runners annually.

Reading has great transports both for commuting to London and for travelling elsewhere in the UK. Both the M4 motorway and the Great Western Main Line rail service connects to the city, along with a number of scheduled boat trips on the Thames.
