Romford - when the only way is Essex...

Less than 15 miles from the centre of the capital, the suburban town of Romford, in the city's north eastern outer reaches, is a historic Essex market town which became part of Greater London back in 1965.

With extensive local amenities, including a vibrant nightlife, it is one of the most significant commercial, retail, entertainment and leisure districts outside central London.

Property in Romford ranges from new build town centre residential developments to mixed use housing schemes. There are also Victorian terraces, 1930s semis. Edwardian cottages, flats above shops or in purpose-built blocks, and bungalows.

Romford is famous for its large covered market, which comprises around 300 stalls. Granted a charter by Henry III, it was established in 1247 as a sheep market and is still open for business three times a week, these days selling everything from fruit and vegetables to clothing

The market and adjacent streets are a conservation area, with two pubs which are listed buildings in the marketplace.

Shoppers' paradise

However, the market is far from the only place in town to go shopping! Indulge in a spot of retail therapy in either the Liberty or Liberty 2 centres, which have dozens of outlets between them, or make the short trip to Lakeside at Thurrock, where there are 300 stores under a single roof.

From leisure centres to bars, nightclubs, bowling, a multi-screen cinema and dozens of restaurants and cafes, you won't be bored in your free time. The town is also home to Romford Greyhound Stadium, one of London's last remaining dog racing tracks, as well as boasting an ice rink.
Lovely Raphael's Park has an outdoor theatre in the summer, and there's also a fortnightly farmers' market.

Travel just 10 miles to the north-east, and there is abundant lush green countryside, with superb parks such as South Weald which are teeming with wildlife and ideal for family days out.

Capital transport links

The town's railway station is on the Great Eastern Main Line within the capital's zone 6. There are plenty of services to London Liverpool Street, a 20-minute hop, along with less frequent trains to Southend and Clacton.

Romford is also a hub of the London Buses network, with services to Canning Town, Stratford, Leytonstone and Dagenham, and night buses to Stratford, Harold Hill and Paddington.

The A12 trunk road passes to the north, while the A118 from Stratford connects with it at Gallows Corner at the beginning of the A127 to Southend

Smarter than some other suburbs, but cheaper than Richmond, Romford offers closeness to central London, low crime, a friendly community atmosphere, some classy shops, schools and restaurants on your doorstep

And if you fancy a change of scene now and again, there's easy access to the nearby coast and countryside.
