Southport - a classic English seaside resort with a twist!

Southport is a Merseyside resort, on England's North West Irish Sea coast, and is fringed by the Ribble estuary.

Lying less than 20 miles north of Liverpool and around 15 miles south west of Preston, it has benefited from significant investment over the years and is more affluent than other areas in the region.

Property in Southport is extremely varied to suit all pockets, from converted and purpose-built flats to retirement homes and terraces, semis and detached family houses. It is also one of the UK's more attractively priced areas.

The town is full of intriguing features, with plenty of buildings, gardens and place which are architecturally interesting. These include the miniature railway, Victoria baths, the pier, botanic gardens and Hesketh Park.

Lord Street is one of northern England's iconic shopping streets, exactly a mile long, with a roundabout at each end. There are residential, commercial and public buildings, along with gardens, water features and architectural interest.

Committed shoppers will be in their element, with retail hotspots like pedestrianised Chapel Street, quaint Wesley Street, the Grade II listed Wayfarers' Arcade and the Royal Arcade for antiques and collectables. Marble Place is a popular undercover shopping area.

Southport has more than 20 miles of unspoilt coastline, offering superb walking opportunities, and it is home to the UK's largest area of undeveloped sand dunes. Marine Lake lies nestled between the town centre and the sea and is used for a variety of water-sports

With Britain's highest concentration of championship links courses, Southport is frequently dubbed the golfing capital of England, with the Royal Birkdale Club often hosting the Open Championships. However, for anyone who prefers cutting grass to playing on it, there is always the lawnmower museum!

The town also organises a succession of spectacular annual events, from its region's biggest air show to Britain's largest independent flower show to a musical fireworks championships and an international jazz festival.

Transport links and education

Southport makes a good base in the North West, thanks to its good transport links. The A565, from north and south, and the A570 run into the town. There are frequent trains to Liverpool and regular services to Wigan, Bolton, Manchester and Manchester Airport.

Schooling in the town is first-rate, with primaries and secondaries enjoying an excellent reputation for academic excellence. Successful local educational establishments include specialist sports college, Meols Cop High, and Christ the King, the town's highest achieving school.

A coastal town with a difference
