Start your property search with Rightmove

In order to get started using Rightmove for your property search, you will have to specify which location you are interested in. There are four different kinds of searches you can perform using Rightmove:

  • Locations or areas such as Cities, Towns, Counties, Villages, for example: Bristol, Great Yarmouth, Cornwall.
  • Postcode Outcode, for example: E11, SS7, G1.
  • Full Postcodes, for example: E11 4QY, L18 4PY.
  • Train or Tube stations, for example: Waterloo Station, Birmingham New Street Station, Angel Tube.

Searching by Location or Area

alt

In order to search for properties in a particular location from the Rightmove homepage:

1.
Enter the name of the place you are interested in into the search box.
2.
Press the relevant button for properties to buy or properties for rent.
3.
If the entered location matches more than one location you will have to choose the select the one you are interested in.
4.
Enter the rest of your property criteria as explained in more detail here.
It is better to enter only the name of the place you are interested in and leave out any names of counties or places that place is within. For example, enter "colchester" not "colchester essex". This will give our search engine the best chance of matching your search.

Searching by Royal Mail Outcode

alt

The outcode is the first half of a postcode - for example in the case of L18 4PY, L18 is the outcode. Rightmove allows users to search for property in any outcode in the country. In order to search for properties in a particular outcode from the Rightmove homepage:

1.
Enter the name of the outcode you are interested in into the search box.
2.
Press the relevant button for properties to buy or properties for rent.
3.
Enter the rest of your property criteria as explained in more detail here.

Searching by Full Royal Mail Postcode

alt

Rightmove allows users to search for property in any full Royal Mail postcode in the country. In order to search for properties in a particular full postcode (for example, E11 4QY) from the Rightmove homepage:

1.
Enter the name of the outcode you are interested in into the search box.
2.
Press the relevant button for properties to buy or properties for rent.
3.
Enter the rest of your property criteria as explained in more detail here.
Bear in mind that a full postcode covers quite a small area - typically no more that 100 properties - so you may want to widen your search to find what you are looking for. You could consider searching by outcode or location, or specifying a radius around your chosen postcode, as described here.

Searching by Train or Tube station

alt

Rightmove allows users to search for property close to any Train or Tram station in Great Britain. You can also search for property close to any London Underground Station. In order to search for properties near a particular Train or Tube station from the Rightmove homepage:

1.
Enter the name of the station you are interested in into the search box.
2.
If you follow the name of the station with any of the following keywords then the Rightmove search is clever enough to restrict your results in an appropriate way: station, rail, railway, tram, tube, DLR, metro, underground, train. For example, "liverpool station" will offer you options including Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool Street Station in London, whereas "liverpool tube" will only match Liverpool Street Station.
3.
Press the relevant button for properties to buy or properties for rent.
4.
If the entered phrase matches more than one station you will have to choose the select the one you are interested in.
5.
Enter the rest of your property criteria as explained in more detail here.
The search will default to a radius of a quarter-mile around the station in question, but you are free to change this radius is you wish. Radius is explained in more detail here. If you are looking for property in London, you should also check out our interactive Tube map search.
