LOCATION
Situated just north of the famous River Tummel, the pretty Victorian town of Pitlochry offers stunning scenery while being sheltered by some of the varied topography which the area is famed for.
Nestled at the southern edge of the town of Pitlochry adjacent to the impressive Pitlochry Hydroelectric Dam with its popular salmon ladders, the woodland known as Tummel Crescent Woods is bounded by Ferry Road to the north and east and Tummel Crescent to the south where there are pedestrian access points. While Lagerach Woods are bounded to the north east by Lagreach Brae with vehicular access available at Rie-Achan Road.
Following the River Tummel, the Tay Forest Park sustains a vast variety of wildlife including red deer and squirrel as well as the rare pine marten, in addition to herons and kingfishers, along the banks of Loch Tummel while the ever-present peak of Ben y Vrackie keeping watch over the town from the north.
DESCRIPTION
The east most woodland, Tummel Crescent Woods, site extends to approximately 10.18 Acres (4.12 Ha) and is comprised of a rich mix of mature broadleaves species principally oak, beech and silver birch. The wood contains a small, abandoned hut which may, under the Hutting legislation, be brought back to life as recreational accommodation, subject to the necessary consents.
While the west most, known as Lagreach Wood, extends to approximately 9.86 Acres (3.99 Ha) and is comprised of a rich mix of ages and species.
While small by comparison to some of the other amenity woodlands in the surrounding Highland Perthshire area, Tummel Crescent and Lagreach Woods provides an opportunity for conservation and preservation in a semi urban setting. Both woodlands may benefit from selective thinning and felling throughout, which might create additional space for furtherer natural regeneration or other woodland activities, in addition to supporting the diverse flora and fauna this area has to offer, from smaller species like red squirrels, hedgehogs, wood mice, fox and rabbits to the larger such as otters and roe deer. There is a vehicular right of access to the hut within Tummel Crescent Wood as the track loops back on itself, however it has not been managed and will require maintenance before a vehicle can take full access. Vehicular access to Lagreach Woods can be taken via Rie-Achan Road.
