Description

LOCATION

Ulverston Parish Centre is situated on Church Walk, a short distance to the northeast of Ulverston town centre, which is in the southwest of Cumbria and North West England. Ulverston has a population of 11,678 (2011 Census) and is a popular market town offering a wide range of local retail and leisure services as well as Booths and Aldi Supermarkets and Marks and Spencer Food. There is a railway station on the Furness Line primarily operated by TransPennine Express from Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Airport and also by Northern Rail Services to Lancaster. Barrow-in-Furness is around 11 miles to the southwest and Junction 36 of the M6 is 25 miles to the east.

Church Walk is accessed from Fountain Street and Ulverston town centre, circa 300 metres to the southwest. The land and property are developed on the southern side of Church Walk at its eastern end before it turns north, between the junction of Sea View and Ulverston Parish Church and adjacent to Church Walk CE Primary School.

The immediate surrounding area is mixed community use with the wider area being residential and the town centre is less than a five-minute walk. Ford Park, which is a popular recreational area is circa 300 metres to the east and from there, there are a number of routes up to The Hoad, a local landmark tower, also known as The Sir John Barrow Monument, which is a further 500 metre climb.

DESCRIPTION

The property comprises a parish centre that will have originally been predominantly single-storey, now having a mezzanine floor created as an extension to gallery seating as well as having a basement at the rear of the premises. The main entrance is from Church Walk with double central timber doors reached from stone steps up and there are two side entrances from Tarn Side and a concrete ramp.

Originally constructed in 1854 as a school, the property is built in stone that is rendered and pebble dashed on three elevations, underneath a number of multi-pitched tile roof coverings and adjoins two residential dwellings on the eastern side. Internally, at ground floor there are three main meeting rooms, a kitchen, two sets of male and female WCs, a disabled WC, boiler room and separate stairs to the mezzanine and basement.

At ground floor, the front double doors from Church Walk open up to an inner hallway with further doors to an atrium providing access to two meeting rooms, male and female WCs, a disabled WC, kitchen and corridor round to a boiler room, further WCs and a classroom.

The meeting rooms have carpeted flooring, plaster painted walls and ceiling, strip fluorescent lighting, wall mounted radiators and built-in cupboards and the classroom has carpeted flooring, part plaster painted/woodchip wallpapered walls, mono-pitch ceiling with exposed timber trusses, strip fluorescent lighting, UPVC double glazed windows, wall mounted radiators and sink unit.

The kitchen is fitted out with carpeted flooring, plaster painted walls and ceiling, strip fluorescent lighting, timber framed single glazed windows, wall and floor mounted units, fixed shelving and 3 No. stainless steel sink/wash basins.

Dual staircases at the front of the building provide access to the mezzanine which is an open plan room with gallery seating to the rear, a further kitchen and a side lobby with stairs and a chairlift down to a double door entrance from Tarn Side. The kitchen has carpeted flooring, plaster painted walls and ceiling, strip fluorescent lighting, timber framed single glazed windows, floor mounted units, stainless steel sink and drainer and wall mounted radiator.

Stone steps from the southwest corner of the building and adjacent to the secondary access from Tarn Side lead down to a single room that has solid concrete flooring, plaster painted walls and ceiling, exposed cross timber beams, a mix of strip fluorescent and spotlighting, window reveals to the rear with solid block glazing, wall mounted electric storage heaters, worktop bench with stainless steel sink, drainer and electric hot water boiler.

Externally, the side access ramp is formed in concrete with a steel rail and there is an enclosed garden with block paving, bounded by a concrete wall, rendered and pebble dashed.
