CentralStores

Started by Charles Bodman in 1845 Bodmans was the central shop in the High Street until 1981.

The shop was well known to people all over the country and many visited just to get a glimpse back in time into a small chapter of retail history more familiar to the Victorians and Edwardian's than to people today.

Sadly in February 1983 Christopher Bodman died at age 90 and the doors closed behind him. In September 1983 auction agents Berry, Powell and Shacknell took on the huge task of cataloguing and auctioning the entire contents of the property. It was reported in the Gazette, that the company were contacted by Channel 7 in Australia and the Philadelphia Journal for information on what they called 'a 1980's Pandora's Box.'

Marshfield High Street ground to halt as more than a 1000 people attended the auction hoping to get their hand on a small piece of history. From Victorian bonnets to brass bedstead, people left with their treasures and a time capsule forever vanished into the memory of a lucky few.

Recently Rachel Finnie and Sally Flint have given the store a new lease of life bringing the newsagents and sweet shop back under the one roof. With the inclusion of Victorian style sweet jars and a selection of goods we can enjoy a glimpse of bygone times. Thankfully the interior of the shop is listed and the mahogany and wall units remain intact.

Stepping through the double entry doors you come into a large shop area, measurements are on the details. Painted pine board throughout. Dominated by the two large counters on either side of the shop area behind rows of shelves and cupboards, currently housing all the stock.

Still in place hung from the ceiling are the original draper rails and hooks. There is ample lighting and power. To the rear a small store room/office. This in turn leads onto a passage way which leads out to the shared rear garden and cellar. Large sash window. Sink and W/C

This is a great opportunity to purchase a piece of working history.
