Full description

Tenure: Freehold

The Gorallt, situated 4 miles from Newtown in Powys, is a really beautiful piece of lowland broadleaved woodland situated in an area rarely visited and very peaceful. This woodland was originally owned by the Forestry Commission and was managed by them until the early noughties. The wood is located on a south facing slope that promotes the growth of timber. As with many woodlands in this part of the world the soils are nicely fertile and combined with the wet local climate offers most tree species near perfect technical growing conditions.

Those who visit will be impressed with the crop of mature beech planted in 1954 which has been regularly thinned to promote the development of large high quality hardwood timber. There is also a fabulous show of bluebells and other wild flowers which carpet the woodland floor in the spring.
These create a fragrant atmosphere in the wood at the beginning of the year.

The slope emphasises just how much timber is crammed into a small area. Most people will be aware that this is a woodland that could supply firewood to a number of wood burners for life. In addition, there is an area of 1930s oak which looks reasonable as well as a small area of western hemlock.

Access to the woodland is excellent via the professionally constructed forest road. This was constructed in 2003 under a Woodland Improvement Grant and it leads to the north
western corner of the wood where there is a small steel framed woodland storage shed, this is shown as point B on the sale plan. This has planning permission to be on site and is approximately 6 metres x 5 metres x 4 metres high. The current owner has used this as a storage shed for various wood products and tools during his ownership. It is also possible to drive four wheel drive vehicles up to this cabin.

The Gorallt is designated by the Countryside Council for Wales as a Plantation on an Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS) as shown on the Natural Resources Wales Land Information Search map.
This designation indicates the land has been under continuous tree cover since at least 1600 AD but where the former tree cover has been replaced, often with non-native trees.
