PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
HISTORICAL NOTES
Originally a ‘burgage’ plot which ran from the High Street to Back Ends (now Hospital Road)
The property was acquired by William Mayo, a carpenter, in the 1660’s, but there is evidence that the Mayo family had been established as millers and bakers in the town since the late 1400’s
John Mayo established a wheelwrights business in the 1740’s which ran until the property became a tailors and drapers in 1850, and they rebuilt the property as it exists today
Around 1880, the business was purchased by Richard Blizard Strong, whose family continued the business as Strong Brothers until 1982. The business continued under new ownership until acquired by the vendor in 1998
A six page history of the property written by the late Guy Stapleton is available
