This is known as a Right to Rent check and it applies to all adults aged 18 or over who\u2019ll be living in the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a standard part of the renting process and doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s anything unusual about your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-right-to-rent-check\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Right to Rent check?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Right to Rent is a legal requirement introduced by the government. It means landlords and agents must confirm that tenants are legally allowed to rent a home in England before a tenancy starts. These checks do not apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-you-prove-your-right-to-rent\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How you prove your right to rent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How you prove your right to rent depends on your nationality and immigration status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"if-youre-a-british-or-irish-citizen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you\u2019re a British or Irish citizen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can usually prove your right to rent by showing one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A British or Irish passport (current or expired, as long as the image still looks like you)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A certificate of registration or naturalisation as a British citizen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have these, there are other documents you may be able to use instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"if-youre-not-a-british-or-irish-citizen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you\u2019re not a British or Irish citizen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can prove your right to rent in one of two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By sharing a Home Office share code, which your landlord or agent can check online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By showing original immigration documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can choose which option to use, and a landlord cannot refuse your application simply because you used eligible documents instead of a share code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"using-a-share-code\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using a share code<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a digital immigration status, you can generate a Right to Rent share code online. You\u2019ll then give this code and your date of birth to the landlord or agent, who uses it to check your status securely with the Home Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-if-you-cant-prove-your-right-to-rent-straight-away\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if you can\u2019t prove your right to rent straight away?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unable to provide documents or a share code, your landlord or agent may ask the Home Office to carry out a Right to Rent check on their behalf. All adults aged 18 or over who will live in the property must have a Right to Rent check, even if they\u2019re not named on the tenancy agreement.
