Year after year, Alicante continues to be the number one location in Spain for international buyers seeking a taste of ‘la vida loca’(1).

In early 2023, Alicante saw an 8% rise in international property deals on the year before, representing 14.5% of all foreign investment in Spain(2).

Alicante is the southernmost province of the Valencian community and the fourth largest in Spain.

Why Alicante?

Well, the region enjoys an average of six hours of sunshine per day and a total of 2,900 per year (3) which is great news for those moving from the UK or Ireland. What’s more is the province boasts a lengthy coastline, 200km of that being the famous Costa Blanca. This area is particularly popular with British, German and Scandinavian tourists (3), but a little further inland there’s a larger community of expats with second homes or who’ve made a permanent move.

A quick look on Rightmove tells you everything you need to know about property in Alicante. You can find low-cost apartments, detached villas and more for under €200k. If you’re looking for something a little larger, say, with room for the family or visitors, you can find four-bedroom properties from €300k. There are a number of new-build properties in Alicante too, which if you’re into the modern, open-plan design, and register your interest early, you might be able to save a few pennies.

 

Where to buy in Alicante?

You’ve settled on the province, but now, where to settle down? Here we’ll outline four areas adored by international buyers for a range of reasons, the lifestyle they offer and the properties you’ll find there.

1. Calpe

Calpe is a town renowned for the Peñón de Ifach Natural Park, a majestic rock that offers one of the most iconic views of Calpe. It’s a top destination for those seeking an active life as there are numerous hiking trails and water sports to discover. The town offers a mix of high-rise apartments, penthouses and luxury villas at a range of price points. The beaches in Calpe are some of the best in the province, with golden sands and clear waters. Calpe also is home to a vibrant fish market and excellent seafood restaurants serving the catch of the day.

 

2. Moraira

Moraira is a town that’s actually been dubbed the “St. Tropez” of Costa Blanca for its coastal appeal and effortless mélange of Spanish culture and modern luxury (5). Along the coast, you’ll find a selection of beautiful, spacious villas, often with breathtaking sea views. The town itself has a lot to offer. There’s a hearty selection of restaurants, boutique shops and a picturesque marina.

 

3. Torrevieja

Torrevieja is a bustling city on the coast that’s known for its diverse community, salt lakes and sunny climate. It’s for that reason that it’s a favourite among those seeking rest and relaxation. In terms of things to do, Torrevieja has a lively promenade, numerous parks and hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year which provide plenty of entertainment options. The property market is varied. Here, you’ll find a wealth of affordable apartments as well as luxury penthouses. It’s an ideal location for families or retirees seeking an affordable, coastal life.

 

4. Orihuela Costa

Last but not least is Orihuela Costa, a stretch of coastline that includes the popular resorts Cabo Roig, Playa Flamenca and La Zenia. This area is particularly popular with British buyers and you can typically find a two-bedroom property for under €200k that ticks all your boxes. However, that’s not to say you won’t find luxury villas here, because you will. Orihuela Costa is known for its beautiful beaches, golf course and shopping centres. It offers residents a lively social scene as there are plenty bars, restaurants and events that encourage new residents to get involved.
