Your Home in Italy
Lake Como is undisputably one of the most desirable addresses in the world and owning a home on this beautiful lake is for many a dream realised, as well as a solid investment. Virtually all the properties within our portfolio offer outstanding views both of mountains and lake, including grand villas with gardens and private lake mooring. Many international celebrities own homes on the lake, the most famous of which is George Clooney. Lake Como is an area of great natural beauty which has been fastidiously preserved, making it also home to wildlife, flora and fauna undisturbed. Building is strictly controlled and extremely limited. Renovation projects of rustic houses and villas make excellent investments and Franks International can recommend local professional and artisans to assist in this process, as well as guidance for obtaining the appropriate licences from town hall (comune).
History of Lake Como
Lake Como, Lario given its Latin name, or Lago di Como as the Italians call it today, has a long and fascinating history dating back to Roman times when it was used as a garrison by Julius Caesar. During the 18th century many royals and aristocrats built magnificent villas some of which are open to the public today such as Villa Olmo, Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta, and others still in private ownership. Villa D’Este in Cernobbio was built as a monastery in the 16th century and is now one of the leading hotels of the world. Mussolini was captured in Dongo on the north of the lake and a stone on the roadside marks the spot.
Lake Como, in the Italian province of Lombardy, is extremely accessible from all parts of Europe by plane or car, being only 40 minutes from Milan. Closest airports: Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, Bergamo and Lugano in Switzerland. The Swiss border is only a few minutes drive from Cernobbio, one of the most sought after lake villages. Several ski resorts in the Valssassina and Valtelina regions are easily reachable for a day´s skiing from home and the famous St Moritz in Switzerland is also close by. For getting around on the lake itself, a regular ferry service runs throughout the year bringing residents and tourists from villages around the lake to Como, Bellagio, Lecco and other lake villages.
