Ortigueira is named after the surrounding area which is called Ortegal. Cabo Ortegal which juts out into the Cantabrian sea is well know in shipping and the most prominent landmark in the region. Ortigueira is a nice historical town with a beautiful marina, shops, restaurants/bars etc. Every Thursday is market day. Medical facilities are available; there is a well equipped hospital. Soon the Cantabria motorway will be finished which will bring the visitor on the coastal route from San Sebastian, Bilbao or Santander directly to Ortigueira.
The unspoiled beaches where the forest slopes down to the white sand are at walking distance and are pristine and unequalled in natural beauty.
Although Ortigueira is well liked by the Spanish people (especially Madrilenians) for the holidays, it is never overcrowded.
Only 3 days in July when the famous traditional Celtic festival takes place. At that time Ortigueira receives around 100.000 visitors per day.
In this coastal region the climate is very mild, never too hot or too cold. The average temperature in summer is 26º, no frost or snow in wintertime. Oranges, lemons, figs, kiwis and grapes grow here.
In the unspoiled coastal mountains (10 to 15 Km from Ortigueira) wild horses and cows roam the country side, wild boar and deer are in abundance.
An ideal area for all kind of sports like; walking, horse riding, fishing (trout and salmon), biking and water sports.
The Galician sea food is famous throughout Spain.
The beautiful historical cities of Ferrol, Coruña and Lugo are within easy reach. La Coruña airport is 85 km from Ortigueira, Santiago de Compostela 120 km.
The Galician infrastructure is very good there are paved roads even to the smallest villages.
