THE LOCAL AREA
The house is on the site of a much older house, and was restored in 1947, having an extra floor added. It is built on the side of the valley which formed a pass to the South at the religious wars - around 13AD. The area was dotted with fortresses; the most famous being Carcassonne but an equally large fortress was built at Lastours. When peace came these were largely pull down but Carcassonne, 20 kms away, was imaginatively restored in the 1800's and is now a World Heritage site. Carcassonne and many of the ancient castles are now part of the Cathar Trail - including Lastours, however, tourists keep to the lower part of the village - well away from this house. In the 1970's this area was known as Secret France and is ideal country for walking, cycling, kayaking and all outdoor activities. There are many fortified villages and sites of interest. The village is in a steep valley with a shallow river which is safe for paddling and trout fishing. There is a large free car park and cars can be left there when residents are away, but nearby parking is available to house holders. Recycling bins are close by. The village Mayer is very pleasant and welcoming to any residents. The village is ancient, going back to the Roman occupation - gold has been mined there and the mine only closed recently. In the 1800's sheepskins were processed and transported by a rail link to Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi. There is a church in the village, a baker patissier with a snack restaurant, a gift shop, small grocery, two auberges, one specialising in local food, and a Michelin rated restaurant. The main city nearby is Carcassonne with good rail and road links and an airport 20 minutes from the house with daily Ryan Air flights.
