About the location:

Silves is regarded as the best northern town of the Algarve and is a great opportunity to discover the "real" Portugal. Silves has a very different ambience from the coastal resort towns. It is surrounded by orange and lemon trees, sitting on the banks of the Arade River.

Silves is an historic old Moorish town and the importance of Silves lay in the fact that it was the main access to the inland areas of the Algarve because of its river location, although the river is now too silted up for large vessels to use.

Silves Castle is now the best preserved castle in the Algarve. The castle and the Cathedral beside it are the first buildings you see as you approach the town, as they sit on the hilltop above the town.

Also close by is the latest golf course belonging to the Pestana Group surrounded by typical fruit orchards and small farms. 

There is also Monchique, a picturesque little village found up North, known for its handicrafts and for its natural beauty. Monchique has the highest peak of the Algarve, called Fóia, with an elevation of 902 metres.
